About this artwork
This is the “Dear Art Collector Chinese” by Guerrilla Girls. It’s a 2007 digital print on paper that flashes bright pinks and yellows against a flat background, immediately grabbing your eye. The Guerrilla Girls are an anonymous collective of women artists and professionals who first formed in 1985 to protest the gender bias of a major museum show that showcased only 13 women out of 169 artists. They wear gorilla masks and adopt the names of deceased female icons to keep their identities hidden while speaking loudly. This poster uses hard data and biting rhetorical questions to point out how women’s work is still missing from private collections. The blend of humor, stark statistics and pop colors is classic Guerrilla Girls: confrontational, witty, and impossible to ignore.
